Woman attacked outside Mercer Street home shares memory from night

A GoFundMe for a woman assaulted Friday, Nov. 28, on the porch of her Mercer Street residence is seeking donations to assist with medical and veterinary bills.

Tiffany Barton, 27, of Butler, said she was assaulted at her residence around midnight on the 200 block of Mercer Street and was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital with serious injuries, including a broken eye socket.

“That investigation is ongoing, and charges may be forthcoming on that incident,” Chief Robert O’Neill of the Butler City Bureau of Police said late Monday afternoon.

Barton said she was one of two people assaulted and taken to a hospital.

“I saw him swing with the crowbar and I screamed and a lot of people came running outside,” Barton said. “He knocked me unconscious. The next thing I know, I wake up surrounded by a bunch of medics.”

A dog also was injured in the incident, according to the GoFundMe.

Barton said she and the other person who was assaulted were on the porch of the home when the attack began, which is what led neighbors to call the police after hearing her scream. She said she went into a seizure after being struck, and the other person was also knocked to the ground by the crowbar.

Barton said she had lived at the residence for about three months.

She said the man who attacked her is in Butler County Prison, but charges had not yet been filed by police as of 2 p.m. Monday. The jail confirmed that the person identified by Barton was in custody, but not yet charged.
