While there have been minor flurries over the past two weeks, Butler County should receive its first major snowstorm of this holiday season, starting Tuesday morning, Dec. 2.

Forecasts from the National Weather Service are calling for roughly three inches of snow, with temperatures as low as 24 degrees on Tuesday morning and reaching as high as only 35 degrees during the afternoon.

Additionally, Butler County will be under a winter weather advisory from the NWS, beginning at midnight on Tuesday and lasting until 1 p.m.

According to meteorologist Liana Lupo of the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, snowfall should begin between 2 and 3 a.m. on Tuesday.

“It's looking like a fairly even spread across the county for snow accumulation,” Lupo said. “Heaviest snowfall rates will happen between 7 and 9 a.m., and snow should be out of Butler County around noon.”

For drivers who must be out on the road as the snow falls on Tuesday, Lupo advises caution.

“Give yourself plenty of extra time, and take plenty of precautions because roads are going to be extra slick,” Lupo said.

Cranberry Township has already posted a notice to its municipal website, alerting residents that it will be pre-treating its roads on Monday night in advance of the expected snow.

Crews from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will be pre-treating state roads on Monday night, according to a news release issued Monday afternoon, Dec. 1. PennDOT is also advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel on Tuesday, and for those who must drive to exercise caution.

Motorists are advised to use headlights, use the car’s defroster and wipers, keep a safe following distance, keep an emergency kit handy, and to avoid driving too fast for conditions.
