Cheap turkeys fly from Butler Township Walmart’s freezers
Deborah Tincha of Butler wasn’t planning to visit Walmart in Butler Township on Wednesday, Nov. 26, but when she decided to go to buy some parsley, she ended up with a gaggle of cheap turkeys instead.
She said the store was out of parsley, but she bought some other items and went to the checkout where she noticed other shoppers with numerous turkeys in their shopping carts.
An accommodating cashier told her the turkeys had been priced at a bargain price of 15 cents a pound.
She said she went to the grocery section and tracked down the cheap birds.
“I got three turkeys for $5.87,” Tincha said. “They were marked in an end cap at 15 cents per pound, and... people were just loading up with turkeys.”
A Walmart manager, Angela Fleeger said a large shipment of fresh turkeys arrived Wednesday morning, prompting the Butler Commons location to set the low price to ensure the turkeys sold prior to Thanksgiving Day.
“We made the decision this morning when we got them in,” she said. “We thought we’d give people a happy Thanksgiving.”
The turkeys didn’t just sell; they flew into carts.
While Tincha saw some customers load up to eight turkeys into their carts, she didn’t have a cart, so bought as many of the Shady Brook Farms turkeys as she could carry.
According to Fleeger, the store only had 10 or 11 turkeys left at the low price at 4:30 p.m. She said the Walmart location was only selling the fresh turkeys for the 15 cent price. It was selling frozen turkeys at about 84 cents per pound.
Since Tincha isn’t hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year, she said she will save the turkeys and prepare them at some point during or after the holidays.
“I’m going throw them in the freezer and cook them up over holidays and share with friends and family. I like to entertain so it's a nice thing to have,” Tincha said.
