Saxonburg is kicking off the countdown to Christmas on Black Friday, Nov. 28, with its annual Holiday Parade.

The parade begins at 7 p.m. from the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company carnival ground and will end at the Dollar General store on Main Street.

“It’s pretty much everything that we've done in the past, but it just keeps getting bigger and better every year,” said Joyce Hutterer, who is running the parade again this year after a two-year leave of absence.

The floats will begin lining up at 6 p.m. at the carnival grounds. According to Hutterer, 42 have entered as of Friday, Nov. 21.

As with last year, attendees will be able to vote on their favorite floats by scanning QR codes on signs placed throughout Saxonburg. Cash prizes will be awarded to the groups with the top three floats.

“We are doing judging by QR code,” Hutterer said. “That way there’s audience participation, so it’s a little more interactive.”

At last year’s parade, the Knoch High School wrestling team, with a Grinch theme, took first place.

There is still enough time for participants to enter their own float in the parade. A Google Form is available and can be accessed through the event’s Facebook page.

“They can enter right up to the day of,” Hutterer said.

The parade will end with an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus. As a result, those who enter floats into the parade have been told not to dress as Santa Claus.

The parade itself will be preceded by a Holiday Market to be held at the South Butler Community Library on Main Street, which will be displaying a large Christmas tree.

“It’s going to be lit for the first time that night,” Hutterer said. “It’s brand new and they’re really excited about it.”

After the parade, attendees can gather back at the library to meet and greet Santa Claus and to sip on some hot chocolate.
