Pa. House approves bill to enhance digital privacy
The Pennsylvania House of Representatives voted 127-76 on Wednesday, Oct. 1 to approve House Bill 78, which — if it successfully becomes law — would create the Consumer Data Privacy Act, a comprehensive data privacy law for Pennsylvania residents.
The bill seeks to limit the amount of information that business can collect on Pennsylvania consumers, while giving those consumers more control over the use of their personal data.
Rep. Ed Neilson, D-174th, is the chief sponsor of the bill, while Butler County’s Stephenie Scialabba, R-12th, is one of the bill’s 21 cosponsors.
“In this digital age, control over your data is integral to your liberty and independence; it’s time we protect it,” Scialabba said in a news release. “House Bill 78 says loud and clear: In Pennsylvania, privacy is a right, not a privilege, in the digital age.”
The bill will now head to the Pennsylvania Senate for its consideration.
