BUTLER TWP — Fighting cancer is more than an emotional, mental and physical battle. It’s also a financial fight.

The Butler Breast Cancer and Women’s Cancer Support Group has put together two major fundraisers over the past few years to help with the latter.

“Wigs, hairpieces, treatments ... It all adds up,” said Cheryl Schaefer, director of the group. “All of the money we raise stays in Butler County and assists cancer patients in their fight.”

Pink Night Out is slated for Oct. 11 at Highfield Hall in Butler. The event runs from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., and features a stuffed pork chop or chicken breast dinner for $15. The dinner is handled by Kountry Catering.

The event also features more than 100 auction baskets — all donated — along with 50-50 tickets and local crafters. A duck game takes place as well. Each of 50 toy ducks has a number on it. For $3, participants can choose a duck, and winning ducks — or numbers — will be drawn for prizes.

“The food is fabulous,” Schaefer said. “Anita Stevens is in charge of the meal and does a great job.”

Some of the baskets are put together by members of the cancer support group. Baskets consist of donated items and gift cards.

Beth Neese, a longtime member of the support group, said she made 60 baskets last year and may exceed that total his time around.

“My mom (also a support group member) does it, too,” she said. “We prepare for this night and it’s a lot of fun. The money goes to the people who need it. That’s what I like most about it.”

A second fundraiser — Friends Helping Friends — takes place Oct. 22 at Boscov’s at the Clearview Mall. It amounts to a daylong shopping spree of sorts.

Support group members and supporters will be stationed at the door leading into the shoe department, selling shopping passes for $5. The pass entitles its holder to 25% off all merchandise in the store from 8 a.m. through 11 p.m.

Schaefer emphasized the discount card includes all sale and clearance items.

“The shopping pass is good all day long,” Schaefer said. “It’s an awesome day. Boscov’s has been great with us. It’s their busiest shopping day of the year, too.”

Schaefer added that donations to the cancer support group can be made by mail as well. Checks can be made out to Butler Breast Cancer and Women’s Cancer Support Group and sent to 166 Jamisonville Rd., Butler, Pa., 16001.
