College sports roundup: Slippery Rock football keeps poll streak alive but slides to No. 24

Slippery Rock University football dropped into a tie for 24th in the latest NCAA Division II rankings.

It’s a 10-spot fall for The Rock after they lost to previously winless Gannon 38-35 to fall to 3-2 on the season. It does keep SRU’s streak alive of staying in the national poll every week since the end of the 2018 season.

PSAC foe California (Pa.) also fell 10 spots to No. 16, and Kutztown stayed put at No. 4.

Conference honors

Slippery Rock men’s soccer goalie Alvey Kaufman was named the PSAC West Division defensive athlete of the week after recording six saves, including a career-high four against Seton Hill, in two games last week. SRU went 1-1-0.

SRU’s Lauren VonderHaar was named PSAC West Division defensive athlete of the week in women’s volleyball after she recorded 16 blocks and 17 kills, including a double-double against California (Pa.) to lead The Rock to a 2-0 record last week.

Knoch grad and IUP senior Mike Formica was named the PSAC men’s cross country co-athlete of the week after he won the 8K in 24:18.20 and finished 85th overall at Lehigh Valley’s Paul Short Invitational. It came a week after he set IUP’s 8K record at Lock Haven in 24:12.70.

Men’s golf

Butler County Community College’s Mitchell Covert shot a low round 72 Friday to lead the Pioneers to wins over Westmoreland County Community College (304-306) and Community College of Allegheny County (304-353).
