Slippery Rock Township to discuss resident behavior with apartment complex

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Township supervisors are looking to chat with one of the off-campus apartment complexes dotted around the township regarding recent resident behavior.

Supervisors decided Monday, Sept. 22, to have a discussion with management at The Heights at Slippery Rock, located off Grove City Road, regarding a recent party that got out of control.

“There’s been a couple parties and one of them got out of hand up there. I’ve seen a video of kids throwing stuff through windows,” Supervisor Paul Dickey said.

In attendance at the meeting was state police officer Gregory Hays, who confirmed that when state police went to help, apartment management turned the lights off throughout the complex.

Supervisors expressed confusion as to why management would do so, but noted the apartment complexes have been asking for more policing assistance in recent years

“It is what it is. It’s kind of been a problem for years,” Hays said about students partying.

“We’ll tell the management up there, ‘Why should we help you when you won’t even let the state police on your grounds?’” Dickey told Hays.

Dickey said before the apartments were even built, the township tried to have conversations to curtail any issues.

“When all these apartment people came in here to build them, we told them all that we don’t have a local police department and they had to have security up there to do this. They agreed to that,” he said.

Ultimately, Dickey and Supervisor John Hines decided they would contact management to discuss the matter personally. Dickey said he hopes a conversation will put things at ease, but refused to rule out other options.

“We might consider revoking their ability to get a permit if they’re not going to cooperate with you,” Dickey told Hays. “I mean, that’s something we can look into. No more parties, anything they do up there would be illegal.”

The next Slippery Rock Township Supervisor meeting is set for 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14.
