Butler football’s offense stalls against Westinghouse in loss: Tornado look to ‘get back on track’

BUTLER TWP — Special teams produced a special play for Westinghouse.

The Bulldogs’ DeJheerit Mellix returned the second-half kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown. After taking an 8-7 lead into halftime, unbeaten Westinghouse ran away from Butler in the second half, posting a 40-14 football victory Friday night at Art Bernardi Stadium.

“We needed a spark, something to give us momentum,” Bulldogs coach Donta Green said. “That kick return did it for us.”

Neither team did much offensively in the first half. Butler had 94 total yards, Westinghouse 73. The Golden Tornado (3-2) used interceptions near the end zone by Marcus Vicari and Tyson Pino to thwart early Westinghouse scoring threats.

“In the first half, we were going toe-to-toe with them,” Butler coach Eric Christy said. “That kick return definitely gave them momentum.”

Westinghouse (5-0) did the rest. The Bulldogs tallied 217 yards in the second half to Butler’s 14.

The Bulldogs won the game despite committing 19 penalties for 164 yards, turning the ball over three times and having a punt blocked.

Westinghouse took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty as the teams headed off the field at halftime, allowing the Tornado to kick off from the visitors’ 45-yard line.

“Our intent there was to kick out into the end zone, give them the ball at the 20 and play defense,” Christy said. “Our kicker just mis-hit the ball, a squib and they ran it back. Our kid felt terrible about it and apologized on the sideline.

“Still, the score was only 14-7. We were still in it. We couldn’t get our running game going in the second half. And their defense ... they react to the snap and attack. We were having a lot of trouble with it.”

Butler went three-and-out on its first possession of the third quarter. The Bulldogs marched 57 yards in seven plays, John Bailey scoring on a 22-yard run to widen the Westinghouse lead to 22-7.

After a 52-yard punt rolled out of bounds at the Butler 2, the Tornado surrendered their second safety of the night. Mark Klemz was tackled in the end zone on first down. Butler had a punt snap sail out of the end zone in the first quarter.

Lane Eakin blocked a punt for the Tornado midway through the fourth quarter, setting up a 20-yard TD drive that cut the deficit to 24-14. Quarterback Nicco Baggetta scored on a 1-yard run.

But Westinghouse responded immediately. Quarterback Omar Pack got loose for a 52-yard run, then connected with Mellix for a 29-yard scoring pass to put the game out of reach with 4:35 to play.

Pack rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown, and threw for 92 and two scores.

“Our regular quarterback (Zahir Ishmail) missed this game with an injury,” Green said. “This was (Pack’s) first varsity start. He never took a varsity snap before tonight. He really came through for us.”

A 48-yard punt return set up the Bulldogs’ first touchdown.

“We work hard on special teams because a lot of teams don’t,” Green said. “We have a lot of respect for Butler. This was the first time this season we hit a team and they hit back. We were able to pull away in the second half, but this was a battle.”

Baggetta threw for 124 yards, but was sacked six times. He connected with Deacon Simko for a 47-yard touchdown pass to give Butler a 7-0 lead early. Kevin Shriver recovered a fumbled kickoff for the Tornado.
