North Catholic sophomores Evelyn Marche and Macaria Stall both fell in the first day of the WPIAL Class 2A girls tennis singles tournament Wednesday at North Allegheny High School.
Marche, seeded No. 5, defeated Sewickley Academy’s Sutton Rea 10-4 in the first round before bowing to Winchester Thurston’s Veronica Zinaski by the same score in the quarterfinals.
No. 11 Stall dropped a 10-5 decision to Sewickley Academy’s Lucy Taylor in the first round.
Belle Vernon’s Gabrielle Dusi and Quaker Valley’s Avery Allan, the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, will meet to decide the district title at 1 p.m. Thursday at North Allegheny.
A-C Valley/Union’s Joe Rapp clinched the KSAC individual title by carding a 34 in the 11th and final mega match of the season at Hunter’s Station Golf Course near Tionesta.
Rapp finished runner-up Wednesday behind Keystone’s Sean Karg, who fired a 30. But for the season, Rapp’s nine-hole average is 36.18 strokes, just ahead of Karg’s 36.27.
Rapp’s teammate, Hudson Bliss, came in with a 37.
Joey O'Donnell of Karns City had a 35 and finished in seventh place for the season with a 41.36 average.
Moniteau was led by Carson Minnear’s 41 and for the season by Brennan Kelly’s average of 43, tying him for 11th.
Keystone placed first in all 11 matches to win the team championship with 121 points. A-C Valley/Union was second with 97.5, Moniteau third at 95 and Karns City eighth out of 11 teams with 44.5 points.
Seneca Valley 190, Pine-Richland 192 — CJ Gworek shot a 34 at Treesdale Golf and Country Club as the Raiders clinched second place in WPIAL Section 3-3A and the district team playoff berth that comes with it.
Also playing strong rounds for SV were Josh Marquardt (38), Marcos Lopez (38), Anthony Cardosi (40) and Vinci Villella (40).
Jade Breese scored three times as Mars overwhelmed Obama Academy 7-0.
The Planets (7-2) also received goals from Addison Jacoby, Reese Vuckovich, Liv Halliday and Torrin O’Leary.
Freeport 4, Knoch 0 — Camryn Woods scored twice while Peyton Los and Elena Jenkins also found the net for the Yellowjackets (7-1, 5-0).
Cece Schlegel, Ella McConville and Los contributed the assists. Alyssa Alcorn and Sophia Crawford combined for the shutout in net.
North Allegheny 5, Butler 0 — The Golden Tornado fell to 4-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 in section play.
Rylee Wooldridge’s 15 kills and 12 digs paced Mars in a 3-0 sweep of Knoch.
Cecilia Christy added 14 kills, Kate Southwell 10 kills and Gabi Weidemann 36 assists for the Planets, who won by scores of 25-12, 25-20, 25-19.
Knoch statistics were not reported.
Slippery Rock 3, Sharpsville 0 — The Rockets swept the Blue Devils, though each set was close — 25-23, 25-21, 25-22.
Lexi Caldwell had 24 assists and Adi Novad nine kills for Slippery Rock (6-2).
