Butler woman sentenced, writes apology for assaulting police

A Butler woman was sentenced Thursday in Butler County Common Pleas Court to serve probation for assaulting a Butler police officer in March after she was pulled over and later charged with driving under the influence.

Cierra R. Hefferan, 22, was sentenced to serve 24 months of probation, including five days on house arrest, pay a $300 fine and complete 40 hours of community service after pleading guilty to a felony charge of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence, her second DUI offense.

Her attorney, assistant public defender Kimberly Hudak, said Hefferan wrote a letter of apology to a Butler officer involved in her arrest soon after the incident and she will send the letter now that Hefferan has been sentenced.

Police said Hefferan was pulled over March 28, exited her vehicle and attempted to walk away during the traffic stop. She yelled racial slurs at officers while showing signs of intoxication, police said.

Police said Hefferan attempted to pull away and kick an officer while being placed into handcuffs. She allegedly threatened to shoot an officer, police said. At the station, Hefferan spit at an officer twice, dug her nails into an officer and continued to refuse commands, according to police.

Before the sentenced was imposed, Hefferan told Judge Timothy McCune that she has already completed some of sentence requirements.
