Batavia Studios, a youth arts center based in Mars, will present the musical “Newsies Jr.,” an abridged adaptation of the popular musical “Newsies,” at the Succop Theater at Butler County Community College over the weekend. Performances start at 7 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15 through 17.

The shows are comprised of two different casts, each of which will perform in two performances. One of the leading performers is 13-year-old Annie Baker, who will play the role of “Pigtails” in one of the casts and a “Newsy” in the other.

Other Butler County cast members include Taetum Dougherty of Butler, who plays the role of Jojo; and Maya Batavia, who plays Albert. In total, the cast includes 40 named speaking roles, as well as the ensemble of Newsies.

“Newsies” is based off the real-life story of an 1899 strike by newsboys in New York City.

The Batavia Studios performance is directed by Antonia Botti-Lodovico and choreographed by Susie Sand and Susana Garcia.
