Karns City man asks for evidence to prepare for trial

A Karns City man made several requests Thursday in Common Pleas Court for evidence prosecutors plan to use in his trial in which he is facing strangulation, assault and firearms charges filed in 2023 by state police.

Joseph R. Parker, 35, asked for a recording of his police interview in which he declined to answer questions.

Assistant district attorney Robert Zanella said police told him they didn’t record the interview because Parker declined to answer questions.

Parker asked for photos of the alleged victim’s injuries.

Zanella said he already gave Parker the photos that were taken by police and the full police incident report.

Parker said the photos he received did not show injuries. “I want photos of injuries, not Facebook photos,” he said.

Zanella said he gave Parker the actual photos and copies of the photos. He showed both sets of photos of Parker and Judge Timothy McCune in the courtroom.

Parker also asked for copies of two police affidavits.

Zanella said he didn’t understand Parker’s initial request.

McCune said jury selection is scheduled for Sept. 11 and trial is set to begin Sept. 15.

According to an affidavit, police were dispatched March 10, 2023, to meet with a woman who reported she was walking with Parker earlier in the day at a Fairview Township property.

She said he led the way toward a camper and told her where to walk. She told police she set off a bear trap and jumped out of the way.

Later, she said she left the camper to smoke a cigarette outside, but Parker got upset, and allegedly dragged her back inside the camper and began hitting her. She said he hit her with the butt stock of a rifle causing injury to the side of her head and below her right eye, according to the affidavit.

She told police Parker also grabbed her tongue and tried to pull it out of her mouth because she was screaming for help and choked her to the point she could not breathe, according to the affidavit.

Parker then allegedly grabbed a pistol, pointed at her, threatened to kill her if she said anything.

He allegedly told her no one would be able to find her and he was able to shoot her from miles away, according to the affidavit.

She also told police that Parker pointed the pistol at her dog, threatened to shoot it and grabbed and twisted the dog's ear, according to the affidavit.
