The playground at Winfield Township’s Municipal Park was expected to reopen following renovations by the end of June, but weather delayed the opening, according to one of the township supervisors.
Located behind the municipal building on Brose Road, the playground has been closed the entire summer for the project, which will replace the current wood mulch surface with a rubber “fall surface.”
“Like with everything this summer, there’s been a bit of rain, so that's set us back,” township Supervisor Matthew Klabnik said. “It was supposed to be done by the end of June and that didn’t happen.”
Klabnik expects the playground to open by the second weekend of August, after the fall surface is poured, dried, and cured.

The renovation, including the new fall surface, is funded by a Local Share Account grant of $99,615 from the Commonwealth Financing Authority, which was announced in October 2024.
Klabnik said the contractor responsible for installing the new fall surface is Jeffrey Associates, a company based in Indianola in Allegheny County, which specializes in installing outdoor play and recreational equipment. The fall surface will be installed on top of a base of stone.
“We had to pull out the old stuff, which was mulch,” Klabnik said. “They still have to do a final grade of the stone.
The playground has been closed since May 19. The initial announcement of the postponement was made through the township’s social media on June 26.
