2 closed downtown Butler businesses facing sheriff sales
Two Main Street businesses in downtown Butler are facing sheriff sales to satisfy mortgage foreclosures.
The sheriff sale scheduled for July 18 includes 142 N. Main St., the former home of Miller’s Quality Meats, and an accessory commercial building at 111 W. North St.; and the Sept. 19 sale includes the building at 101-107 S. Main St. once occupied by Butler Brew Works.
According to court documents, MMG REO II, LLC, of Rochester, N.Y., obtained a $178,042 judgment in mortgage foreclosure against Debra Matonak, who owns the West North Street building and a $153,959 judgment against Miller’s Quality Meats, which Matonak owns.
The judgments were awarded in 2019 and the sale was schedule for 2022, but has been continued several times.
The Progress Fund of Greensburg obtained a $118,863 judgment against Butler Brew Works in April.
Butler Mayor Bob Dandoy said the closure of businesses is unfortunate and there are a number of reasons businesses in Butler may close their doors, from economic to personal.
“(The city’s) focus is on facilitating another business into that building and helping them become part of the downtown community,” Dandoy said.
Butler Brew Works announced via its Facebook account on April 1, that it will be closed “until further notice.” On that day, a representative of Butler Brew Works told the Butler Eagle it has faced an uphill battle since the onset of the pandemic and is currently evaluating its options moving forward.
According to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board’s license search, Butler Brew Works had two licenses expire on Dec. 31, 2024. One is listed as a brewery license for the Butler Brew Works location on Main Street in Butler. The other is listed as a brewery storage license for a location in Valencia. The licenses are classified as manufacturer’s licensed that require annual renewal, according to a PLCB official.
Miller’s Quality Meats closed after sustaining heavy smoke damage in a fire Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024.
Matonak’s late husband, Dennis, operated the business until his death in 2014. He took over the business, which had previously operated as a butcher’s shop, in 1968.
Neither Matonak or the brew works could be reached for comment Tuesday.
