Don’t let the U.S. flag divide

PIXABAY

In the Thursday, July 3, edition of the Butler Eagle, we learned about a new poll that shows a divide among Americans when it comes to displaying the flag.

The poll, conducted by YouGov, spoke to more than 1,600 people and found 38% of Republicans said they fly the U.S. flag every day, while 11% of Democrats said they did so.

The difference becomes even more stark when the poll asked whether the respondents even owned a flag, with 68% of Republicans saying they did and 37% of Democrats saying the same.

Such a division is a stark sign of the mood in our nation, and it’s something that has to change.

If you think any political party has the lock on patriotism, you are also part of the problem.

The flag is non-partisan. It’s a symbol of unity and a physical representation of the idea that 50 individual states can work together for the common good.

Friday marked 249 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, marking the start of the celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary.

Over the next 12 months, as we face political divisions and debate, we should remember that the flag is a sign that this nation belongs to all of us, not some of us.

Long may it wave.
