As of Wednesday, July 2, Middlesex Township police no longer have an officer in charge.

Bryan Costanzo resigned from his position as officer in charge. His resignation was officially accepted by the supervisors at their monthly work session on Wednesday afternoon.

However, Costanzo will remain with the department, keeping the rank of corporal.

According to township manager Jeffrey Winkle, no new officer in charge has been named to replace Costanzo on either an interim or permanent basis.

The department is in the midst of looking to hire a police chief, something it hasn’t had since 2005, as well as several other officers to fill vacancies that have opened since the start of this year. Four officers have resigned since the start of 2025.

At the moment, the township police force consists of five officers — four full-time and one part-time. At the start of 2025, there were seven full-time officers.

When asked about the status of hiring for any of the open positions, Winkle said only, “We’re working on it.”
