Saxonburg looking to replace pavilion at museum
SAXONBURG — John Roebling’s old wire rope workshop and the miniature Brooklyn Bridge replica aren’t the only things that need fixing at Roebling Park.
The borough of Saxonburg is looking for a Local Share Account grant from the state to replace the current pavilion at Roebling Park on Rebecca Street. According to borough manager Steven May, the pavilion currently installed at the park has seen better days.
“The pavement’s cracked underneath of it,” May said, at a council meeting Tuesday, June 17.
The pavilion serves as the second connecting point of the replica Brooklyn Bridge, which connects to Roebling’s old wire rope workshop. The borough manager is hoping to build a larger pavilion that can comfortably seat 50 guests — roughly double what can fit under it now.
This will mainly be done by removing the “snack shack” — a mini-kitchen accessed by a garage door.
According to May, the plans for the pavilion may cause complications for the bridge replica, which is already experiencing deterioration.
“I’ll be researching possible architectural designs that may incorporate the bridge in the pavilion designs,” May said. “The bridge has to be moved one way or another.”
May said an exact amount for the grant application is not yet known, but during its meeting, borough council voted to allow May to seek out estimates for the pavilion on which to base the LSA grant request.
The pavilion is not to be confused with the park’s gazebo — a different structure entirely, which has just had work performed on it.
“We just did a new roof on it last year with a parks and rec grant,” May said.
