Adams Township moving Winter Lights event to July

ADAMS TWP — Winter in Adams Township is starting a little early this year, as the township is moving its annual Winter Light Celebration up five months from the Christmas season to Saturday, July 19 — making it a celebration of Christmas in July.

This year, the celebration will be held at the splash pad at Adams Township Community Park, located near the municipal building on Valencia Road. In prior years, the event was held at the park’s Rotary pavilion.

According to Brian Perry, the township’s parks and recreation director, the event was moved to the summer in the hopes of hosting under a more favorable forecast, which it could not do in prior years.

“We’ve decided to move our Winter Light Celebration just to get better weather for our attendees at our event,” Perry said. “We’ve kind of had bad luck with weather the last couple of years. At the beginning of December, it’s hard to pick a date that works well with the weather.”

For this year’s celebration, Perry said there will be a fireworks show, along with food trucks. Children will get a chance to meet and get their pictures taken with Santa Claus, who this year will be decked out in his summer clothing.

While the Winter Light Celebration, itself, will be moving to July, Perry says that Adams Township still will be hanging lights across the community park as usual during the holiday season.

“During the wintertime, we’ll still have our winter lights,” Perry said. “The only thing that we’ll be lighting up is the splash pad for this event. The whole park won’t be lit up like we normally do for winter.”
