ALTOONA — Having allowed just one run in its previous three games, Seneca Valley was relying on another strong pitching effort in Thursday’s state quarterfinal playoff against Cedar Cliff.
But retiring the Colts was more difficult than SV had bargained for.
Four Raiders pitchers, beginning with starter Luis Torrenegra, combined to allow 10 hits and eight walks as the Raiders’ run ended with a 12-7 loss in Class 6A action at Veterans Memorial Park.
The defeat snapped a 10-game winning streak for SV (18-7).
“We were talking before the game, sometimes as a pitcher you have it and sometimes you don’t,” SV coach Eric Semega said. “Is it mental, is it physical…whatever it is, we didn’t have a good day on the mound.
“We put ourselves in a big hole early. We kept battling to come back, but just didn’t have enough.”
The Raiders held a brief lead thanks to Ryan Piekutoski’s solo home run in the bottom of the first inning.
Torrenegra, who teamed with Ryan Rebholz to shut out Norwin in the WPIAL title game last month, struck out three of the first four batters he faced Thursday.
But when he walked Ian Ripple with one out in the second, it began a string of eight straight Colts who reached base. Torrenegra allowed singles to Blake Secrest, Will Kocher, Luke Sowers and Sammy Georges. A walk to Michael Boblick spelled the end of Torrenegra’s outing. He left with the Raiders trailing 3-1, but was eventually charged with six runs.
He was replaced by Rebholz, who pitched to one batter, Owen Anastasi who walked, before being replaced himself by Piekutoski.
The latter worked two batters into the seventh with mixed results. He pitched scoreless frames in the third, fifth and sixth. But the Colts (19-6) plated three insurance runs in the fourth and again in the seventh.
“Win every inning, that’s our motto,” Cedar Cliff coach Justin Secrest said. “We responded at the plate today, kept chipping away.”
Those tallies were key because SV’s bats never let Cedar Cliff’s first two pitchers get too comfortable.
Piekutoski doubled in a run and Wes Conville singled in two more in the bottom of the third against starter Bennett Secrest.
Nathan Lemke’s RBI-double in the fourth made it 9-5 and the Raiders scored two unearned tallies the next inning to trim the deficit to two runs. Those runs were charged to Kaiden Alday.
“Their pitchers were throwing slower than the 90s we’re used to seeing in the WPIAL, but we adjusted,” SV designated hitter Brandon Godleski said. “There’s 18 guys on this team and we can all swing the bat.”
Added Semega: “I don’t remember seeing one at-bat this season in which our guys were overmatched.”
Finally, Boblick tamed the Raiders, setting them down in order in the sixth and seventh.
Kayden Cahall was SV’s fourth pitcher, entering the game with two on and no outs in the seventh.
The Colts advanced to Monday’s semifinal against Liberty. It is the third time in program history they have reached the Final Four (2019, 2023).
“We’re a young team with five sophomores starting,” Justin Secrest said. “We were hoping to have them learn and get the mistakes out of the way early (in the season). We got hot at the right time.”
The Raiders won the fifth district title in program history this season.
“The longer your season goes, the harder it is when you lose because the hopes and expectations are high,” Semega said. “There’s a huge difference between losing in early May and losing now. We had a great year.”
