Patrons of the Butler Area Public Library can commemorate National Garden Week by starting gardens of their own, thanks to a donation made to the library Tuesday, June 3.

The Butler Garden Club donated sunflower seed packets, as well as a flower arrangement, to the library, to give people an easy start to their garden or add new plants to an existing bed.

Merab Drennen, a 48-year member of the garden club, made the donation and she presented it to the library along with Donna Cella, the club’s secretary, and Susan Morgus, the club’s president.

Cella said the Butler-based group is part of the National Garden Clubs organization, meaning the club members promote gardening in their local community.

“We encourage people around town to beautify their spaces,” Cella said. “They can realize that it’s nice to garden, and maybe they should try it too.”

Morgus said the club spent May planting around Butler and the group maintains plants at the Lowrie House and VA Butler Health Care.

Lori Hinderliter, the library’s executive director, said the donation is appreciated; and it’s not the first contribution the Butler Garden Club has made to the library. According to Hinderliter, members of the garden club have helped circulate books about gardening available at the library through its own network of gardeners.

“We do really appreciate them,” Hinderliter said.
