Kelly wrong on DOGE

On Rep. Mike Kelly’s editorial: “Trump’s policies are rightsizing government, putting America 1st” (May 5, Page 4), Kelly claims that Department of Government Efficiency cuts have saved taxpayers $155 billion.

He doesn’t mention that this figure omits the costs of putting tens of thousands of federal workers on paid leave, of rehiring workers fired by mistake, of the lost productivity of the workers fired, or of defending the hundreds of lawsuits rightfully challenging DOGE’s blatantly unconstitutional actions.

Independent analysis has shown that the savings when properly calculated may amount to less than $20 billion.

At the same time, it is estimated that the gutting of the IRS will cost the government hundreds of billions of dollars due to lower tax compliance and a decline in audits. And the extension of President Donald Trump’s tax cuts for billionaires will actually add $4.6 trillion to the debt over the next 10 years.

His statements on trade are equally wrongheaded. He mentions, correctly, that Trump negotiated and signed a trade agreement with Mexico and Canada in his first term. With his new tariffs, Trump has blatantly violated his own treaty.

What nation in their right mind will now sign a trade agreement with Trump, knowing that Trump won’t honor his agreements?

And that’s the truth.
