Election bureau recounting three precincts

County officials on Wednesday, May 21, praised election bureau staff and other employees for smoothly running Tuesday’s primary.

However, the bureau’s work isn’t done.

Director Chantell McCurdy told the county commissioners Wednesday that the computation board will manually recount primary election results from three randomly selected precincts to test the accuracy of voting equipment after if completes an evaluation of provisional ballot and write-in votes.

The board’s work is open to the public and starts Thursday, and is expected to be completed next Tuesday or Wednesday, she said.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, the computation board will look at any ballot anomalies that were detected, evaluate 63 provisional ballots that were cast and then review the write-in votes, which totaled over 12,000, McCurdy said.

When that work is finished, the board will start working at 8 a.m. beginning Friday on the recount a randomly selected percentage of the votes cast at three randomly selected precincts, she said. Small, medium and large precincts will be chosen, she added.

Next week, after a day off Monday for Memorial Day, the work will resume at 8 a.m. Tuesday and should be completed that day or Wednesday.

The board reviews and recount are open to the public, McCurdy said.

The recount is part of an election equipment certification required by the state, she said.

Leslie Osche, commissioners chairman, commended the bureau for a smooth primary.

“We want to acknowledge and say thank you to our election staff and Chantell,” Osche said.

Staff from the treasurer’s office and other departments assisted the bureau, Osche said.

Commissioner Kevin Boozel thanked poll workers, saying they receive a lot of training to work at the precincts.

McCurdy said her staff and many other county employees worked all day and night during the primary.

“It does take an entire village of this county to really make elections run as smoothly as we like them to run,” McCurdy said.
