Neubert: Enjoying a small-town race feel away from Pittsburgh Marathon

More than 46,000 runners and walkers and 150,000 spectators celebrated the biggest run in the region at the Pittsburgh Marathon, Half Marathon and associated events last weekend.

Participation numbers included individuals and members of 750 five-person relay teams. All 50 states and 19 countries were represented.

Running Pittsburgh’s 26.2-mile course is not easy, but Mulgeta Birhanu Feyissa, of Ethiopia, finished first overall in the men’s race in 2:14:28. Jane Bareikis, of Chicago, was the first woman in 2:35:59. The half marathon saw an exciting photo-finish win by Kenyan Dominic Ondoro in 1:01:46, while Evelyn Kemboi, also of Kenya, finished as first woman in a time of 1:10:05.

I enjoy the energy of a big city marathon, but last weekend I chose to attend an event at the other end of the excitement spectrum. I ran a small-town half marathon to accompany friend Jinny Hertweck on her quest to complete her lifetime 25th marathon.

The 46th Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon boasted fewer than 3,200 finishers for race distances of kids’ 1-mile, 5K, 10K, half and full marathon combined. And all but one of the winners had a Michigan address.

The Kalamazoo Marathon had all the essentials: certified course, chip timing, aid and refueling stations, post-race replenishing snacks and great finisher medals. What the event lacked in size, it made up in attitude — the attitude of midwestern friendship and camaraderie. Everyone downtown and along the winding residential course was encouraging, helpful and excited for the success of this hometown effort and all the participants.

Jinny and I, after our races and an afternoon nap, encountered that same hometown friendliness as we wandered the downtown area. Kalamazoo is home to a vibrant arts community, the nation’s oldest outdoor pedestrian mall, NCAA ice hockey champion Western Michigan University and Bell’s Brewery.

If you’d like to visit, next year’s Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon will be April 26, 2026. Visit www.zeiglerkalamazoomarathon.com for more information or to register.

This weekend, you don’t have to travel far to run a good race for a good cause. The 2nd annual Run Like a Mother 5K and 1-Mile Walk on Moraine State Park’s paved bike trail begins at Lakeview Beach, Pavilion 4.

Keller Williams, international real estate franchise and race sponsor, is committed to giving back to the community it serves. Real estate agent and race director Brandy Kight said last year’s event with 204 runners raised more than $7,600 for Isaiah 117 House, a charity that offers kids who are awaiting placement in foster care a safe and friendly space. They are on track to give over $5,000 this year to provide shoes, clothing, cribs, car seats or whatever is needed for kids on their way to foster homes.

Kight said the event welcomes everyone — runners, walkers, strollers and dogs on leashes. She said it’s a great event for first timers. Race day registration opens at 7 a.m. Sunday. Burn Boot Camp will lead runners in a warmup before the 9 a.m. start.

Post-race refreshments include water, fruit and snacks. There will also be a lemonade stand at the finish area. Through the generosity of community sponsors, Run Like a Mother will offer cash prizes for overall winners and first male and female finishers in age groups from 11-under through 20-29. Age groups through 60-plus receive medals.
