Butler County's great daily newspaper

From white-outs to construction nights, these are some of Butler County’s favorite student section themes

Every high school sporting event in Butler County provides a chance for students to coordinate and dress up as they support their hometown team. There are plenty more themes than just a black-out or white-out.

Here are some of the most unique student section themes that the stands beside the fields or courts of the area have to offer. You decide who steals the spotlight.

Butler: Green party

Butler’s school colors are gold and white, with some navy mixed in. The Golden Tornado’s student section typically shows up in a different color, though.

“We have green as our normal theme,” senior Stone Spack said. “It’s been around since (Ethan Morton played here), I know that. ... They have a green suit for whoever runs Barstool.”

Freeport: Black-out

The Yellowjackets help bring the night to their bleachers.

“Our black-out definitely has the best turnout,” senior Nia DiSanti said. “We’ve had people show up with painted bodies and painted faces. ... At football games, we take a bunch of black confetti poppers and everybody just gets really rowdy.”

Karns City: Island time

Especially during the winter, Karns City likes to enter a much warmer, tropical frame of mind.

“I think beach day is my favorite,” Quinn Robinson said. “We get swimming trunks and beach flannels and beach hats and all sort of things like that. I just think it looks really good. Everyone takes part in that one pretty well.”

Knoch: Country vibes

Knoch’s Koen Sundie likes when everyone gathers in a country style.

“It works for Saxonburg, it’s just pretty funny,” Sundie said. “It kinda fits the stereotype. ... Personally, I wear a belt buckle, a cowboy hat and a flannel. Most people wear jeans, boots (and) flannels. They’re all kinda similar.”

Mars: White-out

Mars’ Joey Santa likes seeing everyone decked out in white.

“I’d say the best one was the white-out, because everyone’s wearing the same themed shirt,” Santa said. “We had some nice shirts this year. ... The student council designed them, and then they sold them in the school, so everyone was wearing the same one. It’s the most coordinated theme of the year.”

Moniteau: Work zone

Moniteau’s bleachers morph into a work zone every now and then.

“I love construction,” Kameron Hershey said. “I feel like it’s kind of an odd one, but when I was a freshman, they built a set (in woodshop class) and they brought it in. ... From there, everybody kinda was like, ‘Oh, it’s construction tonight. I’m wearing my hard hat and high-vis vest.”

North Catholic: Red-out

It’s safe to say every student at North Catholic has a red shirt. Even if not, “it’s pretty easy to get your hands on a red shirt around here,” Gabe Martins said.

“I’d say probably the red-out, because that’s not only our biggest game, but that’s kind of our color — scarlet and gold,” Martins said. “It’s our favorite theme as a school and our best game of the season.”

Slippery Rock: White lies

This one’s a little unique. For “white lies” night, Rockets students write a fib on a white shirt about themselves. For example, Jacob Reich, a senior offensive lineman on the football team, isn’t a supermodel. According to his shirt, though, he claims to be a future model.

“I look forward to our ‘white lies’ theme,’” Reich said. “Just the uniqueness. Everybody has their own thing that they can write on their shirt, and it’s a very creative theme, I think.”
