College roundup: Grove City men’s, women’s lacrosse teams win PAC titles, make NCAA tournament

Grove City women’s lacrosse rallied in the second half of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship game to beat Chatham 11-7.

The Wolverines trailed 7-6, then scored five unanswered goals after intermission to win their second straight conference title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Grove City (12-6) will face John Carroll in the first round at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John Fisher University (N.Y.).

Butler grad Tori Stevenson scored a goal, and Seneca Valley product Elyse Kiggins scooped up four ground balls in goal. Gwen Shilling scored three goals for GCC.

Grove City’s men’s lacrosse team also won the PAC title, its sixth, to qualify for NCAAs. GCC (13-7) will host Albion in the first round at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Wolverines routed Chatham 22-7, with Stewart McClain scoring a game-high five goals in the win.

BC3 golf improves to 7-0

Butler County Community College men’s golf’s Mitchell Covert shot a season-low 3-over 75 on Friday at Lake Arthur Golf Club to lead the Pioneers to a 319-383 win over Community College of Allegheny County.

BC3 improved to 7-0. Butler High grads Xander Downing, Parker Worsley and Jaxon Salata shot a 78, 82 and 84, respectively.

SRU softball’s PSAC run ends

Slippery Rock University was knocked out of the PSAC softball tournament Friday after consecutive losses.

SRU fell to No. 11 East Stroudsburg 8-0 in five innings in the third round, then lost 8-2 to Shepherd in a consolation game. It was the first time The Rock (29-21) made Day 3 of the tournament. They did not qualify for the NCAA Division II tournament.

Naomi Childs went 2-for-4 and Emma Kennedy was 2-for-5 against Shepherd. SRU was one-hit in the loss to ESU.

SRU baseball opens PSAC play

Slippery Rock baseball will kick off the PSAC tournament 8 p.m. Wednesday against No. 6 Millersville, the tournament host.

The tournament is single-elimination on Day 1, then double-elimination after that.
