DUI, fleeing charged after high-speed chase that ended in Sarver

An Allegheny County man was charged with driving under the influence and fleeing from state police for allegedly leading police on a chase on Route 28 from Tarentum to Sarver that exceeded 95 mph on Monday, Sept. 2.

James O. Anderson Jr., 46, of McKees Rocks was charged Tuesday, Sept. 3, with felonies fleeing or attempting to elude police and flight to avoid apprehension, driving under the influence and 21 summary traffic violations.

State police in Kittanning spotted a car just before 3 a.m. traveling north on Route 28 near the Tarentum exit and discovered issues with the vehicle’s registration and insurance, and tried to pull the car over, according to an affidavit.

The car fled at a high rate of speed, and the driver failed to stop at a stop sign and red traffic signals, didn’t use turn signals, failed to stay within a single lane, made an illegal U-turn over a center concrete divider and reached a speed over 95 mph, according to the affidavit.

Police used an immobilization maneuver just north of the Sarver exit in Buffalo Township, and the car drove into the center median where Anderson fled on foot, according to the affidavit.

Anderson crossed Route 28 north and ran into a heavily wooded area, but he was apprehended a short time later. Police said he had a strong odor of alcohol, his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, he admitted to drinking and said he took too many pills, according to the affidavit.
