First ever Zelien-APPLE Fun Fest planned at library

The Zelienople Area Public Library will be hosting its first ever Zelien-APPLE Fun Fest from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Sippel Reservoir Park and the Harmony Trail.

Aimed at younger members of the community and sponsored by D.R. Horton at Creekside Manor and Seneca Hills and Harmony Dollar General, the Zelien-APPLE Fun Fest will include activities such as a scavenger hunt and a Story Walk.

“We wanted to plan a free event to show our appreciation for the successful fundraisers we host like the Wine Walk and the Murder Mystery dinner,” said Nicole Sloka, library director, in a letter soliciting support for the Zelien-APPLE Fun Fest. “Our goal has been to make the library a community hub that provides quality programming and spaces to gather and learn from each other.”

In addition to the apple-themed activities of the event, food will be provided by vendors. J&A Eats will donate cookies, and Tin Man Sweets will donate apple cider doughnuts. Union Brothers will be brewing an apple beer that they will sell at the fun fest, according to the letter.

“The library had realized they were doing a lot for adults with the Wine Walk and the Murder Mystery and they weren’t doing much for the kids,” Michele Papakie said. Papakie is the chairwoman of the committee formed by the library to plan the event.

Music Together will be providing music for children to sing along with. Children’s music will be playing on speakers during the event as well.

The event will feature apple-themed activities, such as leaf rubbing, apple-themed crafts, and a cider-press demonstration. Room to Grow will provide apple-themed games.

“There will be a lot to do ... it’s such a great big awesome space,” Papakie said.

Other vendors include After the Fall Cider, Empowered Education Services, Music Together, Popkins, Room to Grow, Harmony Handmade Soaps, ChickenKnitz, Two Sisters Artisans, Joyce Kristoffy-Hewlett Ceramics/Stoneware, and Rotary International’s ShelterBox program.

“The library wants to be a hub for people to get together and learn together ... it’s kind of nice to get the community together to hang out and take a break from the world,” Papakie said.

The event is free. There will be raffles to win Steelers tickets, Penguins tickets, a handmade quilt and other items. These raffles will benefit the library.
