Petrolia sends proposed burning ordinance to solicitor

PETROLIA — Borough council on Tuesday started the process to create a burning ordinance.

Councilman Walt Barney said he receives complaints about outdoor burning, and he obtained a copy of a burning ordinance from another municipality.

He said an ordinance in Petrolia would regulate the material that can be burned and the times when burning would be permitted. Burning items such as tires and shingles would not be allowed.

The ordinance would not prohibit outdoor grilling and recreational fires, he said.

Council approved a motion to forward the proposed ordinance to solicitor Michael Gallagher to prepare for council to consider.

In unrelated business, council members said $3,200 in donations left over from last year’s borough party will be used toward this year’s party, which is planned for July 27 from 1 to 9 p.m. at the Petrolia Community Park.

The party will include music from county musician Gary Burk, a car cruise and other activities.

Some of the money raised at last year’s party was used to buy eight snowflake Christmas decorations, and money from this year’s party will be used to buy more holiday decorations, said Councilwoman Cheryl Osmer.

The borough is accepting financial donations for this year’s party.

A new floor is being installed in the borough building, which was flooded in the spring. Lawn mowers were destroyed and borough records that were stored in an adjacent building were damaged in the flood, borough officials said.

Council is looking for new members to replace those who have resigned. Mayor Cinda Six and council members Harry Boltz and Pam Gray resigned for health reasons. Residents interested in filling those positions should come to the next council meeting at 6:30 p.m. July 2.
