Mars students earn awards at 2024 Youngstown State University English Festival

Mars Area High School and Mars Area Middle School students competed in the 2024 Youngstown State University English Festival held in April.

In the “I Love Limericks” competition, sophomore Isabel Radens earned first place; freshman Claire Norris and seventh-graders Alyssa Genis, Ella George and Mateus Morgueta took second place; and seventh-grader Ella Ostapchenko received third place. In the Impromptu Essay contest, seventh-grader Avery Harrison took fifth place; sophomore Stevie Oberhofer, ninth place; and eighth-grader Riley Long, 10th place.

In the Writing Games competition, seventh-grader Mateus Morgueta took first place; eighth-grader Sage Mahan and seventh-grader Ella Ostapchenko, second place; and freshman Mei Lien Mansfield, third place. In the Not-So-Trivial Pursuit contest, freshman Reagan Dunn and seventh-grader Rhythm Srivastava earned first place; seventh-grader Ella Reilly, second place; and freshman Sophia Gourash, eighth-grader Addison Neese and seventh-grader Lily Morlino, third place.

Freshman Ava Moravek took third place in the Journalism workshop competition. Eighth-grader Sage Mahan received second place in the Jeremy Salvner Memorial Music Award competition.

To prepare for the event, students read seven books selected by the English Festival Committee. Guest speakers included authors Jasmine Warga and Jeff Zentner.
