PennDOT and the state police are encouraging seat belt safety through the “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign over Memorial Day weekend and extending through June 2.

The two entities are partnering to ensure safety over the holiday weekend through safety checks and continuous patrols on busy roads, according to a news release.

PennDOT secretary Mike Carroll said the campaign is about more than citations, it’s about saving lives.

“Wearing a seat belt increases your chances of surviving a crash by up to 60%,” he said in a news release. “Through continued enforcement and education, we hope to see more people buckling up and fewer fatal crashes on Pennsylvania’s roads.”

According to the release, troopers started patrolling road with high crash rates Thursday, May 23.

Another part of the initiative is advising vehicle occupants to buckle up and remember that children under age 4 must be properly secured in an approved child safety seat. Children under age 2 must ride in a rear-facing car seat until they outgrow the maximum weight and height limits designated by the seat manufacturer, according to the release. Booster seats are required for children ages 4 to 8.

In addition, the release indicates drivers should use 511pa.com on Memorial Day weekend to check on traffic conditions and construction-driven lane restrictions.
