City farmers market opens for the season May 25
The Butler City Farmers’ Market opens for the season May 25, and Bob Dandoy, who supervises its operation for the summer, said vendor spaces are filling up already.
Dandoy, who supervises the market outside of his duties as mayor of Butler, said vendor applications are still open, because even if they can’t fit inside the barn on South Chestnut Street, they may be able to set up nearby.
“We’re either close to or at max for space inside the building. We can always find room under the canopy,” Dandoy said. “We’re still accepting applications for vendors, anyone looking to come down and be farm market family — inside the building is always the question.”
According to Dandoy, many vendors are returning to the market at some point this summer, including popular booths like the Sweet Gremlin, Grandma Betty’s Homemade Cookies and Nedal Gyro, plus several farms selling produce.
Attendance at last summer’s markets broke records, Dandoy said, which prompted the organizers to extend its season past the usual October end date. In addition to wide attendance, Dandoy said some sellers asked to extend the season to sell produce that grows later in the summer.
Right now, organizers are focusing on preparing the market to open at 8:30 a.m. May 25.
“It will be a big day the 25th,” Dandoy said. “It goes until the end of October, with last year we extended it into November.”
