Mineo slam keys SR comeback

Sal Mineo belted a game-tying grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning and recorded the final seven outs on the mound Wednesday as Slippery Rock’s baseball team rallied to defeat Franklin, 11-10, at Critchfield Park.

The Rockets (10-3, 8-2) trailed 8-1 early in the contest, allowing eight runs in the secod inning,. Dom Zandi walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to complete the comeback.

Slippery Rock travels to Sharon for a 4:30 p.m. game on Monday.

Track and Field

Knoch’s Karlee Buterbaugh broke the school record in the javelin with a toss of 131 feet, 5 inches, during the WPIAL team semifinals on Wednesday.

The Knights defeated Mohawk, Beaver Falls, West Mifflin and Waynesburg to earn their way into Tuesday’s team finals at Peters Township.

Softball

Sydney Selker homered and doubled for Freeport (9-6, 5-4) in an 8-6 win over Highlands. Lauren Clark also homered for the Yellowjackets and Addy Caruso doubled.

Ali Smith was the winning pitcher, scattering 11 hits.

M.Gorney struck out 10 and allowed only two earned runs for Highlands (3-11, 3-7).

Mars 16, Moon 13 — Mars improved to 6-11 overall, 5-5 in section play with this win over Moon. The Tigers slipped to 2-13 overall, 2-8 in section.

Track and Field

Trent Beachem, Logan Campbell and David Martino were all double winners for Moniteau in the Warriors’ 89-58 boys victory over Clarion-Limestone. Beachem won both hurdle events, Martino the 200 meters and long jump, Campbell the shot put and discus.

Campbell and Martino ran legs of the winning 4x100 relay as well. Campbell also ran a leg of the winning 4x400.
