PennDOT updates guidelines for school bus stop enforcement

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has published updated guidelines for the use of automated signal enforcement systems to enforce Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law.

Since the passing of Senate Bill 851 in 2023, schools are allowed to install and operate automated camera systems to detect violations of the School Bus Stopping Law.

Beginning this week, schools with automated bus camera systems will be required to submit information to PennDOT and the Pennsylvania State Police each year. This information includes the number of school buses equipped with an enforcement system, the number of violations detected, the amount of fines imposed and collected, and other data points.

In addition, drivers who violate the law will now be given the option to contest their fine before a PennDOT hearing officer. Previously, they were only allowed to contest their fine before the magisterial judge of the district where the violation occurred.

A driver who violates the School Bus Stopping Law is fined $300. Of that fine amount, $250 goes to the school district where the violation occurred, $25 goes to the investigating police department, and $25 goes to PennDOT to use for the School Bus Safety Grant Program.
