Inaugural WPIAL Girls Wrestling Championships slated Saturday

North Allegheny hosting 185 wrestlers representing 35 schools

WEXFORD — North Allegheny High School will play host to the first WPIAL Girls Wrestling Individual Championships on Saturday.

The top five placers in each of the 13 weight classes will advance to the West Regional, slated for March 2 at Canon-McMillan. The region tournament will be held concurrently with the WPIAL Boys Wrestling Championships.

A number of Butler County wrestlers are among the top seeds in their respective weight classes. Knoch junior Miranda Lajevic (18-9) is seeded third at 100 pounds. Seneca Valley freshman Sara Breeger (11-5) is seeded third at 106.

Butler freshman Brin Zehmisch (11-5) is seeded second at 112 pounds while Golden Tornado senior Ana Malovich (9-0) is the top seed at 118. Raider senior Izzy Leighty (13-6) is seeded fourth at 118 and Seneca Valley junior Maddee Fischer (32-5) is the second seed at 130 pounds.

Butler freshman Anastasia Manchester (19-4) is No. 3 seed at 142 pounds.

The tournament begins at 9 a.m. Semifinals begin at 1 p.m. with the finals slated for 4 p.m.
