North Catholic girls golf repeats as WPIAL champion, boys finish 2nd; Moniteau’s Brunst reaches digs milestone | Roundup
North Catholic is a back-to-back champion.
The Trojanettes won the WPIAL Class 2A Girls Golf Team Championships title Tuesday at Cedarbrook Red Golf Course to defend last year’s gold, won by six strokes over Shady Side Academy.
The Trojannettes shot a collective 360, 17 better than last year, beating Oakland Catholic’s 362 to win the title and make the PIAA championships set for Oct. 21 at the Penn State Golf Courses.
“I’m so happy for the girls,” NC head coach Jennifer Campbell said on the phone.
Riley Kontul shot the round of the day, a 77 that was four shots better than anyone else in the four-team field. Brea Kelley carded a 92, GiGi Colafella a 95 and Amelia Karchut a 96.
“Riley’s round was so key,” Campbell said. “The fact that she shot so low today, I think she was just gaining more and more confidence as she was playing.”
Campbell gave the rest of the team Riley’s scores throughout the round and “I think that gave them an opportunity to relax,” Campbell said. The coach praised the freshman Karchut and senior Kelley, in her first year on the team, for their poise.
The boys team finished in a tie for second with Avonworth at 401 cumulative strokes. Chris Faber, who last week medaled at the WPIAL individual championships, led the Trojans with a 71, finishing tied for the lowest round of the day. Eric Proie was two strokes behind his teammate.
Mars’ girls shot 384 to finish fifth, led by Elise Wadas’ 86.
Maelan Bajuszik had a busy night with 27 assists, 13 digs and seven kills to lead Knoch to a 3-1 win (25-22, 17-25, 25-15, 28-26) over Beaver. The Knights (9-5, 8-3 section) also got nine kills from Allie Spencer and eight from Ella Bergbigler.

North Catholic 2, Beaver 2 — Ethan Parnell and Ryan Mueser scored in the second half for the Trojans, while Colin Pilla provided both assists.
