PennDOT requests speed test in Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK — The state Department of Transportation has recommended two speed studies be conducted in response to an incident that occurred in October, when an 11-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle on Franklin Street while getting on a bus.

During the Tuesday, Feb. 6, council meeting, borough manager Christian Laskey said the speed studies would take place on Franklin Street and New Castle Street and would measure the speed of vehicles entering and leaving the area.

Laskey said the borough has conducted speed tests before but “nothing has come of it.” He said, though, he remains optimistic these tests could yield results.

“The way they made it sound is that they can go to other townships and taper (the speed limit) down,” Laskey said “There’s quite a few options but this is the first stop.”

An official date for the test has not been set, but Laskey said the test takes 10 days and he would like the test to be conducted in the cold weather.

Laskey said he believes the borough will not have to pay for the test.

“PennDOT did not mention any cost to the borough at all,” Laskey said. “I feel like that would be something that would be mentioned.”
