David “Dave” Matthew Hall, 60, of Butler, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024, at Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville, Md., following a brief illness.

He was born on Sept. 22, 1963, in Butler, to Jane Mellon Hall and the late E. Richard Hall.

Dave graduated from Butler Area High School, Grove City College with a bachelor’s degree, and Yale University with a master’s degree. Dave was a member of Covenant United Presbyterian Church and the local chapter of DeMolay. He worked for the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., for 37 years. During his long career, he also taught college level courses and served on professional organizations both locally and internationally.

Dave was known for his intelligence, quick wit, and love of a spirited discussion. He enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Lake Erie, cooking for family and friends, and never stopped reading and learning.

Dave is survived by his mother, Jane M. Hall of Butler; brother, Richard M. Hall of Alameda, Calif.; three sisters, Martha J. Towns of Keene, N.H., Barbara Hall of Ellwood City and Victoria Hall of Brockton, N.Y.; six nieces, Stephanie J. Towns of Peeskill, N.Y., Kelly E. Towns of Rochester, N.Y., Jessica M. Towns of Boston, Mass., Melissa Murray of Ellwood City, Brenna Szalinski of Pittsburgh and Abby Hall of Alameda, Calif.; and three nephews, Andrew Waugaman of Charlotte, N.C., Steve Waugaman of Denver, Colo., and Jeremy Hall of Alameda, Calif.

HALL — A visitation for David “Dave” Matthew Hall, who died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 124 E. North St., Butler.

A memorial service to celebrate David's life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Covenant Presbyterian Church (Trinity Presbyterian Campus), 107 Staley Ave., Butler, with the Rev. John C.R. Silbert officiating.
