Hazel Hertweck
Hazel Marie Hertweck, 95, of Portersville, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024, at Good Samaritan Hospice in Wexford.
Born Oct. 25, 1928, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late John and Hazel Pearl Jacobs Averell.
She was a faithful member of St. Faustina Parish, St. Christopher Church in Prospect, where she will be remembered for starting the former Strawberry festival, the potato pancake sales and being a Eucharistic minister.
She enjoyed cooking and for many years worked at restaurants in Pittsburgh and the Portersville area. She loved knitting, baking, cooking meals for other people, making Christmas and Easter chocolate candies and making ceramics with her friends in Prospect.
Hazel received the Paul Harris award and had a special friendship with the Rotary Club of Portersville — Prospect for many years.
She is survived by her children, Charmaine Smith of Mars, Mary Alice Boston of Portersville and DeDe (Denny) Reed of Butler; her grandchildren, Shannon (Mike) Homick and Shawna (Mike Kidder) Reed; her great-grandchildren, Melody, Shaydon and Lillian; her great-great-grandson, William; her siblings, Mike Averell, Sandy Averell and Rick Averell, all of Pittsburgh; and many nieces and nephews, including her niece, Joyce and her husband, Tommy Carrigan, who gave extra care and attention that was appreciated over the past years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Omer Hertweck, whom she married June 19,1954, and passed away Nov. 19, 2010; infant son, Stanley John; grandson, Heath Smith; son-in-law, Bill Smith; brother, John Averell; and her sister, Mary Wirth.
HERTWECK — Visitation for Hazel Marie Hertweck, who died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024, will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at RAISLEY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, 387 Main St., Prospect.
Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Faustina Parish, St. Christopher Church, 229 N Franklin St., Prospect, with the Rev. Adam M. Verona officiating.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Butler.
