Fredley

Theda Jean (Garmer) Fredley, 93, of West Deer Township, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2023, surrounded by her family.

She was born March 25, 1930, to the late Arthur “Ted” and Ruth (Felsing) Garmer. She was a 1948 graduate of Tarentum High School and very proud to be an alumnus of the University of Pittsburgh, where she earned her certificate as a medical technician. She worked at Allegheny Valley Hospital under the mentorship of the late Dr. Montgomery.

Theda met the love of her life, Loyal, and they married in the Bull Creek Church manse on May 2, 1953. Theda became an active and busy homemaker, raising four children in their West Deer home.

Theda always strove to serve others. She was a lifelong member of Bull Creek Presbyterian Church where she led Vacation Bible school, the junior Sunday school department and served on the session, among other responsibilities. She was a founding member of West Deer Meals on Wheels and spent many years planning, preparing and organizing the meals for delivery.

She was a talented crafter and enjoyed quilting, embroidery and tatting, and she made many lovely gifts for friends and family. Theda loved history and her family, and spent many hours with her mother searching through records to expand the family tree. She served as president of the Tarentum Genealogy Society. Up until the time of her death, Theda was an active member of the board of directors of Bull Creek Cemetery Association.

Theda is survived by her son, Loyal (Barbara) Fredley Jr., of Winfield Township; two daughters, Lorraine Fredley of Frazer Township and Alice (Warner) Rice, of Reedville, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Karen Fredley of Pittsburgh; grandchildren; Kathie Fredley, Traci (Gary) Meyers, Sara (Jeremy) Losco, Matthew Fredley and Emily, Rachel and Ann Rice; three great-grandsons, Alex Losco, Koolbie Fredley and Kale Meyers; and her brother, Arthur (Shirley) Garmer Jr. of Springdale.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Loyal W. Fredley Sr.; her parents; a son, Wayne Fredley; a granddaughter, Frances A. Rice; and a brother, Alvin Garmer.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to the staff and friends at Magnolia Place of Saxonburg. Thank you for all the love and kindness Theda received under your care.

FREDLEY — Friends of Theda Jean (Garmer) Fredley, who died Friday, Dec. 29, 2023, will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2024, at SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer Township. All are welcome to attend a graveside service at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Bull Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, West Deer, with the Rev. Robert Henry officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to Bull Creek Presbyterian Church, 224 Tarentum Culmerville Road, Tarentum, PA 15084.
