Fifth-grade science students from Chicora Elementary School recently learned about mixtures and chemical changes by celebrating Pancake Day, and created their own pancake recipes, complete with mix-ins and toppings.

Teacher Kristen Fleeger provided students with the necessary information. With the help of several parents, students decided when to flip their pancake, controlling the consistency of their chemical change, she said.

The fifth grade students rated the activity “5/5” and gave “amazing input” regarding their learning about how their mixtures made a chemical change, Fleeger said.

Fleeger was grateful to parents who donated items and time, especially Amanda McCollough, Christie Conklin and Shannon Ritzert, who assisted at the event.
