Another person charged in 2021 College Street homicide case
A third person has been charged with homicide in connection to the death of a 31-year-old man who was stabbed and shot on College Street in December 2021.
Kahlil Z.H. Rippy Jr., 25, was charged Tuesday, Nov. 21 with felonies criminal homicide, criminal attempted robbery, burglary and criminal conspiracy — six months after two others were charged in relation to the death of Hakeem Moran, of Pittsburgh.
On Dec. 5, 2021, Moran was taken from 109 College St. in Butler to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh with multiple stab wounds and a gunshot wound. He died from his injuries later that night. His death was ruled a homicide.
Hassan L.R. Brack, 37, and Brooke R. Fair Smith, 30, both of Butler, are also accused in connection with Moran’s death and charged with felonies criminal homicide, criminal attempted robbery and burglary. Fair Smith was additionally charged with a count of felony burglary.
Both Brack and Fair Smith are in Butler County Prison and were denied bail.
Charging documents indicate Rippy was recently released from a state prison and do not indicate if he is in custody at this time.
Rippy’s preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
According to Rippy’s charging documents, Fair Smith told police on July 26 that Rippy was present for a conversation with her and Brack about robbing Moran of drugs and money.
Previous charging documents indicated Brack and an unknown male were seen entering the residence shortly before gunshots were heard at the College Street residence. Fair Smith told police Rippy was the other male present for the robbery.
Police said Fair Smith disclosed that following the incident, Brack told her “the robbery turned violent.”
At 7:44 p.m. Dec. 5, 2021, city police received reports that a man had been shot.
Officers arrived on scene four minutes later and were told there had been a fight between multiple males and gunshots were fired. They also saw blood on the kitchen wall, according to documents.
The shooting victim, later identified as Moran, was found on the lawn at 112 College St. Police said he was wearing a boot brace on his leg and crutches were found next to him.
A large amount of suspected crack cocaine, cash and marijuana were found in the grass, according to documents.
Moran was initially taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for his injuries and transferred to Allegheny General Hospital, where he died.
According to charging documents, the caller told police he heard Moran yell, “Don’t shoot me!” before witnessing the shooting.
Police said footage from outside the crime scene showed Moran entering 109 College St., and Fair Smith was seen entering about an hour after.
Screenshots of a text messages between Fair Smith and Brack, obtained by police Nov. 1, 2022, mention the College Street address, as well as who was in the house.
Surveillance footage shows a silver Chrysler Pacifica arriving on College Street 10 minutes after Fair Smith enters. She is then identified exiting 109 College St. and walking on the sidewalk. Police said she acknowledged two men wearing dark sweatshirts, who enter the residence.
Police said Fair Smith then ran toward a gas station. The two men exited the residence and ran toward Linden Street, which intersects College Street.
Moran, on crutches, exited the residence after them toward Linden Street, police said.
Surveillance footage from Linden Street at 7:43 p.m. Dec. 5 shows two people wearing dark, hooded sweatshirts and throwing metal objects under a parked sedan.
According to documents, a woman dropped off a folding knife with a possible blood smear on the blade at the city police station Dec. 7, 2021. She told officers the knife had been found on Linden Street.
The knife was tested for DNA, and documents showed Fair Smith’s DNA profile matched one of the four profiles on the knife handle.
Police said Moran’s DNA profile matched matter found on the knife’s blade.
