Man accused of burglary, attempted burglary in two townships

A Butler man was accused of burglarizing a store in Clearfield Township and attempting to burglarize a store in Summit Township on the same day in June.

Jonathan R. Shuler, 36, was charged with felonies in both cases by state police on Thursday, Nov. 16.

In the first case, he was charged with felonies burglary and criminal trespass and misdemeanors criminal mischief, trespassing and theft.

In the second case, he was charged with felonies attempted burglary and criminal trespass and summaries criminal trespass and criminal mischief.

Documents show an attempted burglary occurred around 12:30 a.m. June 7 at Herman Mini Mart in Summit Township. Police said a man in a bright green sweatshirt, work gloves and black mask, used a pry tool to gain access to the building.

The second burglary occurred around 4 a.m. the same day at Quick Stop Mart on Route 422 in Clearfield Township. Police said the owner opened the store to find a window had been broken, and two registers, $600 and several lottery tickets were reported stolen.

Shuler was identified as the man in surveillance footage at both locations, according to documents.

State police said they attempted to stop Shuler’s vehicle June 10. Documents show Shuler failed to yield to the traffic stop and led a pursuit that ended in a crash and a foot pursuit on Pine Drive in Summit Township. Shuler was charged in June on charges related to the crash, according to documents.

Police said they found in Shuler’s vehicle articles of clothing similar to what was seen on surveillance footage. A witness also identified the green sweatshirt worn in the video as one owned by Shuler, documents showed.

One trooper wrote in the affidavit that he seized a discarded lottery ticket from a shed on Shuler’s property.

Cellphone records obtained by police detailed that Shuler’s cellphone was near the locations of the burglaries around the time they were committed.

Preliminary hearings for both sets of charges have not yet been scheduled.
