Freeport volleyball ends season
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Freeport’s girls volleyball season ended Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to undefeated Philipsburg-Osceola in the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinals.
Match scores were 25-15, 25-21, 25-22.
Alaina Whitlinger led the Yellowjackets (21-3) with 13 kills and two blocks. Sydney Selker contributed nine kills. Freeport was the defending Class 2A state champion.
Reese Hazelton paced Philipsburg-Osceola (24-0) with 23 kills, five aces, 17 digs and eight points.
The Yellowjackets did not lose a regular season match to a Class 2A opponent. Their only defeat was at Seneca Valley.
The Yellowjackets fell behind Beaver, 2-0, in sets in the WPIAL title match before rallying to force a fifth set. Unbeaten Beaver won that deciding set, 15-13. Freeport then swept District 10 champion North East in three sets to begin state tournament play before being eliminated on Saturday.
Freeport says goodbye to four seniors: Selker, Autumn English, Josie Russo and Grace Beach.
