North volleyball starts slow, can’t rebound in title-game loss to Hampton

PETERS TWP — An elite level of volleyball had landed North Catholic’s girls in the WPIAL Class 3A final, but the Trojanettes were unable to sustain it against top-seeded Hampton.

The Talbots got off to a dominating start and though North’s play improved during the course of the match, it couldn’t avoid being swept Saturday at Peters Township High School.

Hampton (22-0) won its first-ever district title in the sport with scores of 25-10, 25-16 and 25-21 against the defending-champion Trojanettes.

“Sometimes, it’s just not your day,” said North coach Amanda Fetter. “Hampton is a really good team and when you play a team like that, you have to bring your ”A“ game and we didn’t do that today.”

Led by outside hitter Emma Rick and middle hitter Payton Galietti, the Talbots opened up a 17-5 lead in the first set before winning by 15 points.

“The girls have been working hard in practice and it was nice to see that lead to a good start for us,” said Hampton coach Dainen Holler. “You could tell they were ready to go.”

The second set followed a similar script, except that North managed a late surge with kills from Camdynn Gonzalez, Sienna Cozza and Ella Koziara.

North held a late 20-19 lead in the third set. Brooke Sciullo and Cozza both had three kills that had the Trojanettes on the verge of forcing a fourth set, but Hampton responded with kills from Sterling Thomson, Galietti and Rick to help the Talbots control the net late.

“We had 17 hitting errors and six service errors. That’s almost a full game’s worth of points right there,” said Fetter. “We killed ourselves today.”

Koziara had 10 kills in the match to lead North. Cozza contributed 18 assists.

Hampton totaled 41 kills, led by Emerson Schrom’s 12, and committed just 13 attack errors. Lilly Muczinski dished out 28 assists.

“North Catholic is a really solid team,” said Holler. “They’re scrappy and make you earn every point. I couldn’t be more proud of our girls. They play for each other and we’re excited to get this title.”

The Trojanettes (18-2) had won three straight WPIAL titles, in Class 3A last year and in Class 2A in 2020 and 2021. They will begin play in the state playoffs on Tuesday at District 10 champion Warren.

“We’re blessed enough to keep playing,” said Fetter. “We have to gear up for states, prepare and be ready in case we run into these guys again.”
