Amanda Dittman, a homemaker, and Samuel Dittman, a laborer — photographed on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023 — have lived together in a farmhouse in Parker Township for 14 years. The home was built in 1903 by Amanda's great-great-grandfather and has never had a well. With depleting water levels and an unreliable water source, the couple discussed installing a well, but has not been able to afford one. Irina Bucur/Butler Eagle

George Trojanak, business development manager with Goulds Water Technology, paints the Dittman's porch Thursday morning, Oct. 5, 2023, as a volunteer project following the installation of a well on the property. One of the groups most affected by water shortages in the United States are rural communities, where municipal water isn't available and well installation can be pricy, he said. El Niño patterns have contributed to a dry year, said meteorologist Shannon Hefferan. With an exceptionally dry winter and leaky holding tank, the water levels of the cistern across Samuel and Amanda Dittmans home run low, disrupting daily life. The Dittmans have relied on the spring and cistern for 14 years. Now that they have a well, the family will continue to keep the spring as a backup water source, Amanda Dittman said. Eric Flick, contractor of Flick Drilling from Tionesta, carries supplies outside the Dittman home to his truck. The Dittman farmhouse in Parker Township has been in Amanda Dittman's family since 1903, when it was built by her great-great-grandfather. The home has never had a well, instead relying on a spring. A well was donated and installed outside their home the last week of September by Xylem Watermark, in collaboration with Water Well Trust, the Chris Long Foundation, Waterboys, Aquaflow and local contractors. It took about a week to drill the well, said Ed King, executive director of Aquaflow, the company that donated the well pump and well tank said. Finishing touches were made Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023.
