Man attempted fraud at 2 county banks, police said

A New York man attempted to cash checks by displaying a fraudulent passport at several banks in Butler County, according to documents.

Kevin A. Carter, 47, of Long Island City, N.Y., faces several felony charges filed by Butler City and Saxonburg Borough police departments.

According to court documents filed Sept. 28, Butler City charged Carter with felonies criminal attempt of forgery and fraud.

Carter was also charged by Saxonburg police with felonies identity theft, criminal attempt of forgery and forgery.

In his first case, Saxonburg police were notified of a man who attempted to make a withdrawal from NexTier Bank using someone else’s identity.

The man, later identified as Carter, left the bank after the transaction was denied, police said.

On the same day, city police said they responded to NexTier Bank on East Diamond Street for report of an attempted fraud by Carter. The bank staff said they were aware of Carter, who has been accused of entering banks in Allegheny and Butler counties and trying to cash checks under fraudulent names.

Staff reported Carter showed them a passport card with a his picture on it, but fled the bank prior to obtaining any money, documents showed. The passport card had a fraudulent name printed on it.

Police said the bank staff reported that Carter had attempted fraud at other NexTier locations that day.

Carter was located near Butler Technologies, and he was identified as the man on the fraudulent passport. A $2,100 check was found in his shirt pocket from a previous fraud incident at Huntington Bank, police said.

Butler City police were able to locate the passport Carter used in Saxonburg in his vehicle, documents showed.
