Police: Woman passed 25 fraudulent checks
A woman was accused of taking 25 checks from a Saxonburg residence and having them cashed in Slippery Rock, according to police Tuesday, Oct. 3.
Rebecca L. Buckham, 36, of Girard, was charged by Saxonburg borough police with 25 counts each of felony and misdemeanor theft and felony forgery following reports from March.
Police said two people reported Buckham took and wrote checks from First Commonwealth Bank without permission. The checks belonged to four different accounts and were taken between Dec. 21, 2022, and Feb. 1, documents showed.
Each check was labeled with the name of another witness, who told police that Buckham would meet him in the parking lot of Clearview Federal Credit Union in Slippery Rock, documents showed.
Police said Buckham would schedule a meeting and present checks that were already filled out, asking the witness write his name on them and cash them in the bank.
According to the affidavit, Buckham claimed to need the money for fines and rent, and asked the witness to cash the checks because she did not have a bank account.
Buckham’s preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
