Just 1 fight at a time

Adams excited, yet even-keeled about title bout at Pullman Park

One fight at a time.

That’s how 27-year-old Lucas Adams of Butler is treating his professional boxing career. That’s why it didn’t bother him when he had to pass on ESPN’s offers to put him on fight cards at Madison Square Garden and Atlantic City.

And it’s why he’s not letting his 8-round American Boxing Federation light heavyweight title match against Alejandro Fugon of Palmdale, Calif., Saturday night at Michele Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park get out of proportion.

“Believe me, I’m excited about fighting at Pullman,” Adams said. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do my entire life. I’ve been to all of Brian Minto’s fights there.

“But it’s my next fight. That’s how I have to look at it. I go one fight at a time and go from there.”

Adams is 5-1-2 in his pro career. He has never won by knockout nor has he ever been knocked out. That includes his amateur career, which consists of more than 50 fights, including a handful of bouts in the Butler Cubs gym.

Adams boxed as an amateur in the Butler Cubs program from 2011-18. He turned pro in 2019 and owns the ABF cruiserweight title.

“I had a losing record in amateurs, but I fought a bunch of guys who are high-ranking pros now,” Adams said. “I lost a lot of split decisions, close matches.

“I turned pro because I thought pro fights would be more my style. It’s working out so far.”

While Adams has no knockouts, Fugon, 36, will enter Saturday night with a 4-2-2 pro record. All four of his wins are by knockout.

Fugon’s last win was a knockout in the hometown of a Massachusetts fighter who was 3-0.

“That guy’s coming here to fight. He’s coming to win,” said Rich Cramer, Adams’ trainer. “He comes straight-ahead, looking for a knockout.

“Lucas is more of a counter fighter who has been getting more offensive. I think he’ll take advantage of (Fukon’s) style, use his movement and counter off those aggressive punches. I believe Lucas is gonna knock the guy out, I really do.”

Lucas was 190 pounds when he won the cruiserweight title. He’s at 175 pounds as he prepares to fight for the lightweight crown.

“I lost the weight naturally,” he said. “I ate right and cut the weight gradually. I have a chance to own two ABL titles and I’m going for it.”

Adams works 12 days on, two days off at a steel mill in East Butler. He gets off work each day at 5 p.m., goes to the gym and works out until 8, then goes home to prepare to follow the same pattern the next day.

“When I get a day off, I get my running in, usually four miles or so,” he said. “The longer this fight goes, the better for me. I’m in good condition.”

Adams has fought an 8-round bout and a 10-round fight before. Fugon has never been scheduled for more than six rounds. He’s never had a fight go that far.

“He either gets knocked out or scores the knockout,” Cramer said. “This guy goes for broke.”

“Two contrasting styles like ours usually makes for a good fight,” Adams said.

One day, Adams may take one of those ESPN boxing opportunities.

“The other times were on short notice,” Cramer said. “With his work schedule, he couldn’t do it. He just wasn’t ready.”

Saturday’s boxing card begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50, $75 and $100 and will be available at the gate.
