Adams Twp. adopts portion of Davidson Road for realignment

ADAMS TWP — Supervisors approved adopting portions of Davidson Road on Monday, Aug. 14, as part of the ongoing reconstruction of Three Degree Road.

“The school put in Docs Way a number of years ago and there’s an offset with Davidson Road,” township manager Gary Peaco said. “You have a lot of bus traffic that goes through there.”

And with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Route 228 Corridor Improvement projects requiring all Mars Area School District buses to utilize Docs Way, the intersections are about to become even more crowded.

“So that puts even more traffic on Davidson Road, and if you ever watch it, it’s very, very confusing,” Peaco said. “So now it’s going to be a bus intersection, so the buses can go straight through. They’re going to go back and forth much, much easier.”

Peaco said the township worked “very closely” with the school district, and that realignment of the roads would be beneficial for it.

“The other thing too is PennDOT’s putting in a trail on the eastern side,” Peaco said. “At that intersection we’re going to have a crosswalk.”

He said the crosswalk would include flashing signage to help students navigate the increasingly busy roads.

“We need a safe place for kids to cross, and the idea was that they’ll cross there,” he said.

As part of the $3.7 million phase two in the township’s Three Degree Road project, the reconfiguration will cost just over $220,000 and be funded by transportation impact fees from developments.

Vice chairman Ron Shemela said paving on phase two was planned to begin this week, starting at the school, and warned residents that the next two weeks would be “hectic.”

“We’ve tried to cover as many bases as we can, it’s just going to be a little bit tedious for the next couple weeks with Three Degree,” he said. “They’re going to try to maintain traffic as best they can.”

While traffic in the area will allow for residents and emergency services, he said a detour would be posted for all through traffic.

The project, according to Shemela, is shooting for completion by Labor Day, Sept. 4.

“I feel confident they’re going to do it,” he said. “They’ve done a great job communicating with all parties involved — about as good as we could ask.”

License plate readers

Supervisors also approved a request from the Adams Township Police Department for the purchase of four new license plate readers for the Community Park.

“We looked at the whole park and came up with four spots where we’re going to put the LPRs,” chief Shawn Anglum said.

He said the cameras would cost $11,938 and were expected to arrive within “a couple of weeks.”

“Just to clarify: This is going to cover every entrance and exit of this park,” chairman Russell Ford said. “So any vehicle that comes through the park, we will have a picture of the license.”

Peaco added that the cameras would be no different than similar readers in other municipalities.

“Most of the intersections in the area already do that,” he said. “So it’s no different than traveling to Pittsburgh or Cranberry.”
